Self Made

Directed by: Gillian Wearing

Visual artist Gillian Wearing uses real people in her work to explore the way we perceive ourselves and the way we present ourselves to others. For her first film, she combines documentary and narrative modes to address this topic in a bold new way. She finds seven people through an ad in the newspaper to participate in a ten-day Method-acting exercise, and during the process they manage to uncover hidden truths about themselves and ultimately channel their experience into a short fictional film. The result is a bracing portrait of self-examination through performance. (2010, 89 min., UK)
