This untitled film documents advertising legend Tom Burrell, his upbringing on Chicago’s south side, entry into advertising, his creation of Burrell Communications Group and his post-retirement work authoring Brainwashed: Challenging the Myth of Black Inferiority. His subsequent non-profit group and speaking engagements are dedicated to promoting intra-racial dialogue. The film gained its genesis in Kartemquin Films’s Diverse Voices in Documentary Workshop. Kartemquin Films and the Community Film Workshop of Chicago organized the program, which strived to develop and mentor documentary filmmakers of color. Over the six month course the Burrell documentary was workshopped by director Jonathan Ashley in areas from project development, storytelling, community outreach, and culminated in producing a three minute demo video used below.
