In the history of aviation, there have only been 14 of them: sole survivors of commercial airline disasters. Most have never spoken publicly about the loss, the guilt, the immense pressure of feeling "spared.” Focusing on George Lamson Jr., the only survivor of the 1985 crash of Galaxy Airlines Flight 203, SOLE SURVIVOR lets four of them share their very complex, personal stories for the first time. Director Ky Dickens in person for intro and Q&A!

Chicago has a thriving documentary film scene, and our filmmakers Pamela Sherrod Anderson, Ky Dickens, Mary Fishman, Carey Lundin, and May Tchao bear witness. As independent producer/directors, they bring stories to light from a unique and nuanced perspective, that otherwise would be passed-over in the mainstream media.

Their award-winning films – THE CURATORS OF DIXON SCHOOL, SOLE SURVIVOR, BAND OF SISTERS, JENS JENSEN THE LIVING GREEN, and SPILLED WATER - were fiscally sponsored by Chicago Filmmakers. Chicago Filmmakers’ fiscal sponsorship program enabled these filmmakers to raise tax-deductible donations and grants, and our classes and meet-ups gave them a place to find community and support. In short, Chicago Filmmakers helped make these films happen.

Chicago Filmmakers is planning to purchase and restore a beautiful historic fire station at 5720 Ridge in nearby Edgewater to be our eventual home. When construction is finished, we will have spacious screening and studio space, bright new classrooms and offices, and exciting new programming. But we have a long way to go, and we need your help to reach our goal.

Please see these wonderful films, bring your friends, and support our move to the Ridge Firehouse!

Ky Dickens - Director, SOLE SURVIVOR

Award winning filmmaker Ky Dickens, directed the highly acclaimed documentary Fish out of Water. Fish out of Water was a success on the festival circuit, winning four juror prizes and securing international distribution immediately after its release. Her second feature film, Sole Survivor, profiles four people who, through the vagaries of fate, were the only survivors of otherwise fatal plane crashes.  Sole Survivor was acquired by CNN FILMS for broadcast and theatrical release.  It premiered on the network in January, 2014.

In October of 2013, Ky received the FOCUS AWARD for “Achievement in Directing” from Women in Film.  Ky has been a documentary juror and panelist for film festivals around the country.  Her current film, ZERO WEEKS looks at America's paid leave crisis. She is also member of the Gene Siskel Film Center Community Council.

Outside of independent film, Ky directs critical short videos.  She partnered with Rock the Vote & Equality Illinois to direct the Vote Naked campaign, which resulted in over 500,000 absentee ballot requests in Illinois and dramatically impacted midterm elections. Ky also directs TV commercials at Chicago-based CONSPIRACY. Ky graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors from Vanderbilt University.
