News clippings play over a series of meticulously composed shots of Chula Vista, California, where our unseen protagonist, an undocumented Mexican family, is unexpectedly deported to Tijuana, Mexico. An homage to Chantal Akerman's structural film News from Home, NEWS FROM CHULA/JUANA is a geopolitical meditation on the cultural anxieties and alienation faced by millions of deportees everyday. Filmmaker Jo Kamimura, a Japanese-Iraqi filmmaker, moved to the United States at the age of two. Enduring both identity and citizenship issues, he began to look beyond mundane concerns and awakened to a harmonic vision of reality. Self-taught in filmmaking, Jo explores the journey of transforming pain into peace, in an ever-changing and complex world.
