Screening Series
The Screening Series is devoted to the public exhibition of independent film in all its forms.
We highlight the best in experimental, documentary, animation, short narratives, and other genres that fall outside mainstream cinema. Many of the films screened here have received awards or acclaim elsewhere but are without theatrical distribution and would never otherwise come to Chicago. Others may have never screened anywhere, and do not have an appropriate outlet to be shown. Local film and video makers are especially important to us; the series began with local artists creating an alternative venue to show local work, and we are dedicated to continuing this tradition. We encourage filmmakers to submit their work and check out our call for entries for upcoming shows. Likewise, we encourage our audience to take a chance on these wonderful discoveries, and see for themselves what truly independent film is all about.
Chicago Filmmakers has been providing a showcase for innovative independent film and video for over 30 years. We seek out excellent work by new and established artists, develop audiences for each screening, and provide the proper space by which to experience it. The Series fosters public awareness of film and video as media for artistic personal expression, as well as media of social and political impact. Without the commercial advertising budgets used to promote Hollywood studio productions, we partner with local organizations and reach out to local media in order to develop public interest and critical attention for each show.
The Screening Series presents weekly programs on Friday or Saturday evenings. Formats may include thematic shows, Chicago premieres, repertory, juried shows, open screenings, tours, retrospectives, and live performance. Chicago Filmmakers is one of a few spaces in the city to provide an alternative filmgoing experience, and presents artists in person as often as possible to discuss their work with the audience.
